Staff Opening: Minister of Music

We are seeking a Minister of Music to lead worship, accompany congregational singing, and coordinate and direct musical volunteers.  We are looking for a candidate of faith who brings strong skills for playing the piano (and organ if possible), experience leading worship, and skill in directing small musical groups.  The Minister of Music will work 10 hours/week, primarily on Sundays, and receive a salary of $20,800/year with paid time off. Anticipated start date: January 2026

Position Description

Asbury United Methodist Church is a Christ-centered congregation, called to serve as people of peace together and for our neighbors.  We are seeking a Minister of Music to lead worship, accompany congregational singing, and coordinate and direct musical volunteers 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the Christian faith and the work of ministry

  • Strong skills for playing the piano (and organ if possible), leading worship, and directing small musical groups

  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and equip the diverse team of musical volunteers who serve in the church

  • Familiarity with a broad range of church music, from hymnody to contemporary Christian music.  Asbury morning worship involves 4-5 songs, drawn from United Methodist Hymnals as well as CCLI licensed contemporary worship songs.

Hours: 10 hours/week, Sunday mornings 9:00-1:00, One Sunday evening/month 5:00-6:30, plus 

seasonal services and administration

Start Date: January 2026 

Compensation: $20,800/year

Paid Time Off: Four weeks/year by arrangement and two weeks paid sick leave

Job Description:

Sunday Worship

  • Play piano and/or organ in accompaniment of congregational songs, musical offerings, and other acts of worship

  • Lead the congregation in worship 

  • Rehearse the volunteer musicians for the day in the hour prior to start of worship, or after worship

  • Select music for and direct the vocal choir, chime choir, and instrumental ensemble

  • Work with soloists to select and prepare music to offer in worship

Special Services

  • Accompany a monthly contemplative prayer service on Sunday evenings at 5:30 pm

  • Lead worship music on Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Maundy Thursday or Good Friday

  • Availability to play or help resource Services of Death and Resurrection, and Weddings (by contract)

Musical Partnerships

  • 6-8 voice adult choir

  • 2 octave chime choir

  • Instrumentalists: Brass Quartet, flute, saxophone, guitarist

  • Two substitute piano players

  • The Minister of Music will actively seek to develop new partnerships as possible

Administration

  • Work with pastor to plan worship services seasonally

  • Arrange for quarterly tuning of pianos 

  • Work with office staff to manage CCLI permissions and reporting

  • Manage annual budget and the purchase of new music and supplies

  • Arrange for substitute musicians for Sundays when absent

Accountability

As a staff member at Asbury UMC, the Music Minister is accountable to the pastor of the church as well as to the Staff Parish Relations Committee.  Annual performance reviews and regular feedback will be offered through these two partnerships.
